Tuesday – Another lazy day in paradise

Ben headed off this morning with Charlie, the resort dog, looking for fish in the coral while the tide was out.  Unfortunately, Charlie is not the quickest of dogs (call it old age) and just seems to bound around missing them by miles!

The dark patch in the water above is the coral reef, the light turquoise section beyond that is sand.

It was a hard day today, we did however branch out from our usual sun lounger and use the hammock!

So, for lack of any other exciting, or should we say, unusual things happening during the rest of today, we have given you a bit of light reading below, enjoy!

Fiji is made up of 833 islands, which are scattered across 518,000 square kilometres of the Pacific Ocean.

It was first settled approximately 300 years ago by Melanesians and then Micronesians.  The first European to discover the islands was Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, who sighted Fiji in 1643.  It was not until Captain James Cook approached the shores more than 130 years later, in 1755, that European settlement began.  The British rule of Fiji began in 1874; with them they brought indentured labour from India to work the sugar cane plantations.

In 1970, Fiji gained independence and was declared a republic.  Today over half the population is native Fijian, and the other half from Indian descent.
