We made our own way to Universal Studios, on the 704 bus from Santa Monica to Vermont, where we hopped on a metro to complete the journey. Nearly 2 hours after we left the hostel we arrived at Universal and entered the gigantic complex.
The first person we saw on entering Universal was Dora the Explorer…and how could Nicola resist getting a picture for Maisie!!
We also grabbed a camera opportunity with characters from Madagascar and Jaws.
We then jumped on board a Studio Tour, an entertaining tour of the back lot, passing all of the studios where many well known shows and movies have been filmed.
We saw numerous street facades (fake street fronts, that were only a metre or so deep), set in recognisable places like New York and London.
Next was the new part of the tour, King Kong 4D, where we entered a huge warehouse that had a gigantic wrap around screen that took us to Skull Island where Kong protected us from dinosaurs!
We passed through a lot with some recognisable cars from the movies, and then stopped off to see the secrets behind the car scenes in ‘The Fast and The Furious’.
From there we went to Little Mexico and experienced a flash flood, and then went underground to live through a simulated earthquake on the subway.
The set of Jaws was next, where we watched as a rubberised shark launched itself towards our trolley car.
The set of ‘Psycho’ was quite sinister, but nothing would beat the journey through the plane crash set from ‘War of the Worlds’, where Steven Spielberg had used a real plane to create this morbid scene.
When we had completed the tour we went to ‘Krustyland’ where we entered the world of ‘The Simpsons’.
Jurassic Park and the Revenge of the Mummy were two great rides we rode on next, before watching the show ‘Waterworld’…where we both got absolutely drenched.
Our last shoulder rubbing experience with some recognisable stars was when we met the cast of Shrek.
With the best of the day behind us, and chuck out time round the corner we left Universal Studios and started our 2 hour journey back to the hostel, feeling completely shattered by the time arrived back later that night.
