We checked out of our hostel this morning and caught the shuttle bus to the airport. We were booked to take a short internal flight from Honolulu on the island of Oahu, to Kona on the Big Island.
A short 30 minute plane ride later and we were beginning our descent over the volcanic lava fields north of Kona, it was an eerie sight looking out of our window.
The open air Kona airport was a breeze, and once we had picked up our bags we were off to collect our ‘compact’ hire car…or not as the case maybe! They had no compacts available, so we entered the land of the free upgrade…meet ‘Humbug’ our giant American car!
We hit the highway heading south, with an average speed limit of 35mph the 8 mile journey to our accommodation felt like a lifetime.
Home for the next 3 nights is at Pineapple Park Hostel, with our friendly host Annie, a petite Korean woman who has a line for everything. On check-in she kindly upgraded us (for free) to a private room with en-suite…we are loving these free upgrades!
We chilled out in the garden for the evening, swotting up on dive companies, as we hope to do the famous manta ray night dive whilst we are here…it is ranked as one of the top 10 dives in the world!
Our room is above on the far left. Ben also made friends with the resident dog – Lily.
After cooking dinner in the communal kitchen we settled in for the night with some ‘volcanic’ beer from one of the islands brew houses…when in Rome!
