Monday morning took us back onto the streets of Georgetown, this time we were hoping to do the self guided trades and food trail. The problem that fast became apparent with these 2 tours was that none of the traders or foodies appeared to be working! It was however, a great way to explore the backstreets of Georgetown and see some hidden gems of the many religions and cultures that lived here together. We saw Malay (muslim) mosques, Hindu temples, Chinese clan houses and also lots of ancient shophouses.
After a short break at the hotel, mainly to cool down and appreciate the aircon we headed out again, first to the train booking office to book our tickets from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore (next wednesday) and then to the post office, which was less successful unfortunately...no package will be winging its way back from here! (As we were hoping to send the rather entertaining diving DVD, featuring the pros!).
In the afternoon we explored Fort Cornwallis (which was now open). It is merely a shell now, with only the outer walls and chapel remaining; but it represents the site where Captain Light (who first claimed Penang for the British) stepped ashore in 1786. We then headed to the Protestant cemetary to visit his grave.
Dinner tonight was a delicious southern Indian vegetarian dish (it was cheaper without meat!!). Tomorrow, if we can find the right bus we are going to visit Penang Hill.
