Wednesday – Eungella to Hideaway Bay, 296kms

We were up at 5:30am this morning to try and get a last look at the platypus before we checked out and left Eungella National Park.  We think though that they had all decided to stay in bed this morning, as there were non at the viewing platform.  We did find one feeding under the bridge, however he was way too quick to catch him on camera!  As a last ditch attempt at seeing one we walked along the trail at the back of the information centre, and were lucky enough to see one in the rock pools.

Back to our lodge to have breakfast and shower before checking out and the steep and winding drive down the mountain.  We had a short stop in Mackay, and then rejoined the Bruce Highway heading north to Proserpine, the journey taking just over an hour.

We decided to pop into Airlie Beach to have lunch, but as we were not planning on doing a tour of the Whitsundays we were going to stay slightly further north.

We sat and ate our sandwiches overlooking Airlie Bay, and then headed off towards Hideaway Bay, a village slightly north of Airlie.  It was supposed to be a quiet, secluded campsite only 200 metres from a deserted beach…just what we needed.

As we pulled into Hideaway Bay Caravan Park we were not disappointed, the lady who ran the place put us (as she put it) away from the few ‘oldies’ she had in, and we parked up and enjoyed a cold beer.  We then went for a walk along the empty beach, admiring the beautiful shells that had washed in from the reef that skirted the beach.
