After a very good nights sleep we got up at 7am and after having breakfast packed the van up and left the campsite. Only after stocking up on food and fuel did we realise that we had left all of our towels and swimming stuff hung on the line at the campsite. We drove back as quick as possible and retrieved our stuff, and then finally hit the road heading north.
The drive north was a pleasant one, and we de-toured from the main highway to visit the town of Bundaberg, famous for its rum guzzling bear! The bear in question of course belongs to the Bundaberg rum distillery, and by lunch time we were exploring the gift shop (as the tours were seriously over priced and we had both seen our fair share of rum distilleries).
We opted instead to investigate further the soft drinks side of the company and travelled the short distance to the ‘big barrel’, where we went on a tour about the history of ginger beer.
After the tour had finished we got to sample the whole selection of soft drinks the Bundaberg company had to offer, we agreed on the favourite – lemon and lime with bitters.
Back on the road we took the road north out of town and after a little detour through the sugar cane plantations to Moore Park Beach for lunch we were on the home straight for the day, just over 100kms to the Town of 1770. Aptly named by Captain James Cook to commemorate the year he first stepped ashore on the Queensland coast.
By 4pm we were in the neighbouring town of Agnes Water, and the short drive along the coast brought us to 1770, and our camp site for the next 2 nights – Captain Cook Holiday Village. Checked in and parked up we kicked back with a beer, booked ourselves on a reef tour for tomorrow and Ben threw another steak on the barbie – yum!!
