This morning we had a well earned lay in and after a shower had breakfast at the camp kitchen. The sky was overcast this morning, and rain was sporadic, so we hid in the bungalow waiting for it to hopefully pass over.
After waiting for what seemed like ages we decided to brave the weather and head out anyway. We walked 1km along the road to the head of the Forts Loop Trail. We begun by reading a warning about all the deadly animals we might see, and what to do to avoid them; death adder, box jellyfish…phew, better keep an eye out! Then started our walk climbing higher into the bush.
The Forts area is famous because during World War II there was a huge complex constructed in this area to protect the huge port of Townsville from attack by Japanese invaders. We were lucky enough to pick our way through many of the well preserved remains.
Above is a picture taken at one of the two gun emplacements.
Next we scaled the walls of the observation tower to admire the spectacular views from the top. Where people once stood watching for enemy invaders, we now stood looking north and south up the coast, and across to Townsville.
Our route back to the bungalow was a long one, as we decided to take the scenic route back – 4.8kms up and down through bush and steep granite boulders. Once back though we chilled out and Ben spoke to Mum and Dad Fenton.
