Today we awoke to miserable weather! We packed up and loaded the van, starting our 189km drive north to Kaikoura. The 2 hour drive was dreary, with flooded roads, mud slides and incessant rain.
Kaikoura is famous for it’s marine life, which is in abundance due to ocean current and continental shelf conditions; the sea bed gradually slopes away from the land to a depth of 90 metres, and then plunges to 800 metres. There are resident whales, dolphins, seals, penguins, shearwaters, petrels and albatross.
On arrival into the small town we enquired about wildlife tours, however, due to the bad weather nothing was running today.
We checked ourselves into the campsite and spent the afternoon in our cosy cabin.
All eyes are now on the weather channel for an improvement in the next few days so we can get out and meet a whale!
