Saturday – Happy Birthday Ben!!

Today was a special day, not only was it Ben’s 30 something birthday, but it was also his first Winter birthday!  We had planned to celebrate in style and drove into the centre of Dunedin for the day and night.  No breakfast at the campsite, as Ben had requested his first treat of the day to be nice food at the Otago Farmer’s Market…so first on the menu was a Chinese pork bun (reminiscing from our Asian leg of the trip), and second…a bacon buttie, with all the trimmings – yum!

With our bellies full we wandered out through the railway station, which was next to the market,

and up to the cinema to check out timings for the 2nd treat of the day - ‘Inception’.  With tickets booked for the 5pm showing we dropped into Speights Brewery to sample some of the local brew.

As time was flying we decided to go and check into our hotel for the night…yes, Nicola was treating Ben to a night out of the van!!  We had a suite for the night at a central hotel called ‘Living Space’…with en suite bathroom and all the trimmings, no running to the loo across a campsite for us tonight!

Now time to sing “Happy Birthday”…and seeing as the Kiwi’s aren’t too keen on birthday cakes (trying to find one was like finding a needle in a haystack) Nicola improvised with 2 kiwi bird cup cakes!

Ben liked his new tee-shirt…transformers NZ style.

We then put our glad-rags on and went to the movies, and after the film went for dinner at Ben’s choice of restaurant…Lonestar.  With a reputation for delicious meaty meals this place didn’t disappoint.  Ben ordered the ‘Lasso of Hog’, and if only Nicola could have caught on camera his reaction when this mountain of a meal turned up!!  Yes, the pork really was an inch thick!!

After dinner we wandered down the road to The Duke of Wellington, an English themed pub with some recognised favourites on tap.

As the first round of the Aussie Vs All Blacks rugby came on the big screen TV the pub went crazy…next Saturday we will be at the home leg in the crowds at the game!!  We watched for awhile before moving on to an organic brew pub for another drink and the 2nd half.
