Today we had a lazy morning before walking down to the Britomart train station to get the 12:35pm special service to Penrose station where the Mt Smart Stadium was…home to the Vodafone Warriors.
Unfortunately for us the weather had taken a turn for the worst during the night and the rain had been consistent since the early hours. So, when we got to the stadium we took the poncho on offer and hid under the stands to keep dry for as long as we could before going to our ‘cheap seats’ in the uncovered stand.
We also decided to put our ponchos on, which we soon discovered were in support of the home side! The Warriors usually wear black, however today they were wearing their white kit in support of the ‘All Whites’ the Kiwi Football team, who are on their way to South Africa…apparently the last time they were at the World Cup was in 1982!
We headed to our seats and the match kicked off at 2pm, with the first scorers being the Warriors. It was a good first half, and the rain seemed to be easing off. Our seats were right behind the goal, and great place to see the try that the Dragons scored just before the half time whistle!
In the second half unfortunately the Warriors were the weaker side for the most part and the final score was 20 Warriors and 22 Dragons.
All in all it was a good game to watch, the crowd were alive throughout (unlike the sleepy Aussie rules game we saw in Melbourne), and the Maori drums sounded throughout…a great experience!
As we caught the train back to the city the rain had eased and we had a dry walk back to the hostel from the station.
