Saturday – Auckland Museum

After having a browse (and taste) at the Auckland farmers market we walked to the Domain to spend the afternoon at Auckland Museum, supposedly one of the best museums in New Zealand.  It was widely famed for its display on the Maori, and we were not disappointed!

With a whole gallery full of the beautiful Maori carved wharenui (meeting houses), and Maori arts we spent our time trying to take all the information in.

We then spent the next 3 hours on a whirlwind tour of the other 2 floors; the highlights probably being the WWI and WWII galleries - telling the story from the NZ point of view, Auckland 1866 – where shops from the that era had been restored in a specific gallery, and volcanoes.  We also saw our first kiwi…albeit stuffed!

After being thoroughly informed of all elements to do with New Zealand we left and walked back to the hostel.  A night in front of the TV before the big match tomorrow!
