Monday – Port Douglas to Cairns, the Australian journey ends!

This morning we checked out of the lovely Port Douglas hostel and started our drive south on the Captain Cook Highway.  We stopped at our last lookout of the trip – Rex Lookout which gave us stunning views along the coast looking south.

And, when we arrived in Cairns we visited our last 2 ‘Big Things’ of the Australian leg of our trip (rumour has it that New Zealand might also have a fascination).  Ben didn’t waste anytime in getting his picture taken with the big marlin, and the big Captain Cook!

We also said goodbye to our faithful old car that had got us around this part of the coast…’the cripple’ as it had fondly been nicknamed by Ben.

We then checked into our hostel (booked for cheapness and location near to airport)…and realised why we always stayed in YHA’s…yes people we have become hostel snobs!  We hastily got 24 hours internet and sat sorting stuff out for NZ and reading…no pictures of said ‘bad’ hostel!  Which we have discovered is full of 18 year old Brits who sit around doing nothing, eating super noodles and drinking…kids!
