Friday – The Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium

We caught the train into the centre of Chicago this morning, and walked to the Museum Complex.

The entire complex is south of the centre, and sits picturesquely on the lake edge.  Once again, we got some great views of the Chicago skyline and cityscape.

First stop for us this morning was at the John G. Shedd Aquarium.  It was donated to the city in 1929 by John G. Shedd, the president of Marshall Field’s department store.  It houses approximately 25,000 marine animals, representing 2100 species.

The City Pass tickets got us entry into the 4D film (Planet Earth by the BBC) and the Oceanarium show.  The latter show was interesting; we watched as the trainers instructed beluga whales and dolphins, the purpose being to aid with their development and health.

We then spent the next couple of hours wandering around the other exhibits.  It was quite interesting to spot how much of the marine life we had actually swam with at some point over the last year!

Thankfully neither of us had swam with a giant spider crab…which looked quite intimidating.

Before we left the Aquarium we browsed the gift shop, where they had the most impressive collection of pink toys we had ever seen!

Lunch was continuing the ‘Chicago’ famous food theme, where we sampled the Chicago hotdog, which has pickles and peppers, but no sauce!

After lunch we visited the Adler Planetarium, where we explored the exhibits and watched a 3D film on the big screen about a ‘Journey to the Stars’.

As we had a date with the Fenton family on Skype that afternoon we caught the ‘El’ back to the hostel for our catch up….it was lovely to see you both!

Our plans for the evening didn’t quite work out, we were going to travel back into the city and take an evening boat tour on the river and lake. However, when we checked the internet we discovered that they do not run during the fall/winter months.

So, we then decided to take advantage of the free chilli night at the hostel…but, when enquiring this had been cancelled!

Plan C was to order Chinese, and when it arrived over an hour later we ate with a beer.
