This morning we left Queenstown, joining the highway that would take us on our journey further south. The first leg took us alongside the picturesque Lake Wakatipu to Kingston.
As we left Kingston we entered a thick fog that lasted for the best part of the journey, only as we dropped down into Te Anau did the skies clear and the sun shone.
We checked into the Te Anau Great Lakes campsite and took a stroll into town; the walk took us along the shores of beautiful Lake Te Anau.
We dropped into the Te Anau Wildlife Centre and visited the vocal residents. First was the Kea (mountain parrot).
Then, Nicola’s favourite NZ bird the Takehe, an impressive green and blue bird with a red beak, thought to be extinct up until their rediscovery in 1948.
Ben then had a thrilling conversation with a very friendly Kaka.
We then headed back to our cosy campsite to relax in front of the TV in the lounge (with a real log fire!).
