Thursday - Wanaka

We awoke to a lovely sunny morning, with only a few clouds in the sky. Ben put the call through to Southern Alps Air, and was told that the forecast for Wanaka was good, however Milford Sound (reputed to be the wettest place in the world) was forecast rain.  So, unfortunately the trip was cancelled and we have had to reschedule for Saturday (as tomorrow – Friday – is forecast to rain).

Plan B is a walk!  As recommended by the DOC (Department of Conservation) yesterday we set off on the 12.5km hike to Glendhu Bay.  The track took us along the perimeter of Lake Wanaka, and was very hilly, but scenic.  We had great views of the town and surrounding area.

We finally arrived at Glendhu Bay 2 hours 30 minutes later and sat having lunch overlooking the lake.

The return leg was quicker, as we both knew what to expect!

When we got back to the campsite our bodies were aching…even more so when we worked out that in total we had walked 26 kms, or 16.15 miles, or 1 million inches!!

Needless to say not much was on the agenda for the evening…apart from entertaining our new friend…the camp cat, which had made our van it’s new home!
