Monday – Franz Josef Glacier…walks around the valley.

This morning was an early start for Ben; up at 6am to watch the World Cup final in the camp TV lounge.  Nicola stayed in bed, and managed to see only the extra time…and the one goal of the match.

We drove out to Franz Josef Glacier car park, and started on the hike along the Waiho river bed to a view point in front of the glacier terminal.

We saw waterfalls crashing down the side of rock faces, and glacially carved cliffs.  In front of the glacier terminal there were plenty of warnings about not crossing the protective barriers, as it was a site of many ice and rock falls.

The next hike was Sentinel walk, a short steep track that led to a glacier viewpoint, the views from the lookout were amazing.

After lunch we started along Douglas track, to Peter’s Pool (named after a 9 year old boy who camped here in the late 1800s, when the terminal face reached to just behind the pool).

Next stop was Lake Wombat, our last hike of the day…a beautiful glacier lake that was peacefully away from the crowds.

Tonight is our last night at the Rainforest Retreat camp ground in Franz Josef Village before heading south to Haast.
