Wednesday – Goodbye Australian, Kia Ora New Zealand!

3am alarm rings and we are up, washed, packed and waiting for the airport shuttle bus within 20 minutes…old pros at the packing game!  Arriving at Cairns domestic terminal at 4am we have a short wait for the check in desk to open and then check straight through to Auckland and go through to departures.

The plane left on time, and it was a sad farewell to Cairns and all that had wowed us in North Queensland, truly a beautiful part of the country!

Landing in Brisbane it felt strange to think that it was over a month ago that we had bid farewell to Elaine and Rob, when we continued our journey north.  As we watched the departures board we both sat reminiscing over our 3 months in Australia, what an adventure we had had!

The flight was slightly delayed due to the incoming flight being late, and we watched eagerly as they prepared our plane (photo below).  When we finally boarded plane number 2 of the day the excitement grew thinking of country number 9 (if you include the Hutt River Province) on our round the world tour!   New Zealand here we come!!!

The flight was a good one; we were fed, watered and watched a chick flick!  And, as we landed into Auckland the views across the country were exceptional.  You will all be relieved to know we have been given a 6 month visa (although we are staying for only 3 months and 12 days!), and passed the tough bio security checks…our trainers nearly didn’t get in, it was touch and go as to whether we had to scrub the mud off the bottom!

A short bus ride and walk later and we were checking into our rather snazzy hostel ‘The City Lodge’…and on getting to our room admiring the amazing views of the city skyline!

First lesson in Maori…Kia Ora (hello!), first lesson in Kiwi…i = u, so “fish and chips” becomes “fush and chups”!
