Sunday – Port Douglas, the Seafood Festival and…Eurovision!?

After a lovely long lay in and leisurely breakfast we drove into town as it was the last day of the month long Port Douglas Carnivale, a famous festival celebrated each year by the small fishing town.  On arrival we were pleased to find out that the Marina had been turned into one big festival for our favourite cuisine – seafood!!

We had a walk round to see what was on offer, and decided to treat ourselves and come back later for lunch.  Next stop was the chapel by the sea, a popular place apparently for weddings, as it was right on the beach – very beautiful.

We then meandered through the Sunday market, which had all manner of stalls selling everything ‘knick-knack’ you could possibly want!  We resisted purchasing anything and instead had an ice-cream from a shop on the main high street and walked down to 4 mile beach.

Oh, and as the photographic evidence shows Nicola purchased a new top – layers for the cold climate of New Zealand!

Back to the Marina and the seafood festival was going full steam ahead; with a band on the top deck of a yacht singing to the crowds, who were all swigging on a bottle of something cold, and munching on various seafood…we decided to join the fun!  First purchase was salt and pepper squid – delicious, and, a cold bottle of Cooper’s Ale.

We then had a HUGE plate of king prawns, for $5…everything was freshly caught that morning, and tasted delicious.

So, with bellies full we retreated back to our lovely hostel for the afternoon before getting our glad-rags on and going out for what we decided was going to be our farewell Australia meal!  We wandered along to the Central Hotel and ordered ourselves the mixed seafood platter for 2…featuring the who’s who of the Port Douglas seafood world: barramundi, prawns, oysters, squid.

After which we washed it down with a cold schooner of Nicola’s favourite ale Fat Yak…the plate was well and truly licked clean (apart from the salad, which neither of us had any room left for)!

As we walked back to the hostel we thought…”what could possibly make such an amazing day even better?"  And, when we switched on our TV on getting back to the room, there was the answer…Eurovision, complete with Australian commentary…priceless!!  Considering neither of us had watched the show in the UK for years we were both hooked (should we admit this?) and found it hilarious!!
