Friday – Day 2 Fraser Island

Today was an early start (again – yawn), and we were up and raring to go at 6am!  The bus left the resort and headed north up 75 Mile Beach; as it is a straight open stretch of beach the speed limit along here was 80km, so it felt like we were really flying along now.

First stop today was the Maheno shipwreck, a passenger liner that was blown ashore in 1935 during a cyclone.  All that is left today is a shell, however from standing next to the wreck you could get a sense of scale on what she was like in her heyday.

Further along the beach we came to the Pinnacles, a section of the dunes that were sculpted into coloured sand cliffs – very huge and beautiful to look at.

Back on the bus, and we were lucky enough for our guide Warren to spot two different types of sea snake…both had been brought ashore by hungry eagles and dropped onto the beach once they became too heavy for them to carry anymore.  We stayed well clear as they were still alive, and that meant still deadly and venomous!

Last stop on this journey north was the Champagne  Pools, a collection of salt water pool.  A couple of the group went in for a dip, however the bracing coastal wind prevented us from being brave.

Back on the bus heading south we stopped at Indian Heads, where we walked the short distance to the top to admire the views across the north and east coastlines of the island.  Unfortunately we did not see any marine life today as the seas was too rough, however we did get startled by a F1-11 jet, that swooped down low against the headland.

Heading south again our last stop before lunch was Eli Creek, a crystal clear water way that if deep enough (not today) you could float all the way down it to the sea.  We decided to wade instead, and once back at the bus were treated to coffee and muffins.

Our lunch at the Eurong Beach Resort was an early one today as we were to start our journey west inland to Lake McKenzie.  This beautiful clear lake, with white sand beaches was the perfect place to end our tour of the island.  After a couple of hours relaxing we hopped back on the bus for the short journey back to the barge.

As we set sail on the 30 minute journey back to the mainland the sun set in front of us.
