Early start ..

Up at 4:30 this morning for Pim to take us back to Angkor, we arrived at Angkor Wat and wandered up to our sunrise position and waited in the dark.

Slowly the sky became lighter, revealing the outline of Angkor Wat in front of us (along with several hundred coach loads of Korean tourists). We snapped away with our camera unitl the sun appeared from behind the temple, then decided it was time for breakfast - 'omelette bread' from a nearby vendor.

With bellies full we pushed on to explore the temple itself, then went back to our tuktuk to drive on to the south gates of Angkor Thom and entered the complex.

Neither of us were really prepared for the scale of Angkor, there seems to be a different huge temple building round every corner. We wandered around the Angkor Thom complex, first the Bayon temple with its 216 stone faces staring down at us, then further on into the complex exploring the temples, each with a seemingly higher and steeper set of steps to climb !

Back in the tuktuk we passed through the Victory Gates and continued on to the unfinished temple of Ta Keo, where another climb awaited. At the top we decided we were all temple-d out, so left Angkor for the day (back for more tomorrow) and returned to town to stock up on water and strange sounding local snacks (garlic pepper prawn crackers and Tom Yum Gang crisps) in preparation for further adventures tomorrow - will give sunrise a miss in favour of a lie in this time though !!
